The Copper Line Retirement Is Coming for Your Elevator Phone

Across NYC, carriers are retiring the old copper phone network. Federal regulators cleared the way years ago, and the major carriers have been steadily filing to shut down copper in neighborhood after neighborhood. When it happens in yours, the analog line feeding your elevator phone either stops working or gets moved to a replacement service — often with little warning and a much bigger bill.

Why elevator phones are hit hardest

Most NYC elevator phones were installed decades ago on plain analog POTS lines because that's all there was. Those lines have three problems today:

• They're being retired. Carriers no longer want to maintain copper plant, and in many areas they're no longer required to.
• They've become absurdly expensive. Buildings routinely pay $100 or more per month for a single copper line that does nothing but sit in an elevator machine room. Multiply by several elevators and it's real money.
• Nobody fixes them anymore. When a copper line degrades, repair windows stretch from days to weeks — while your elevator rides out of compliance.

What replaces a copper elevator line

Two proven paths, both code-compliant when installed properly:

Cellular elevator lines. A cellular dialer with battery backup replaces the copper line entirely. No dependence on building wiring or carrier copper, and monthly costs are typically a fraction of what the POTS line now bills.

Managed VoIP elevator lines. Where the building has reliable internet and backup power, a managed VoIP line with battery backup does the same job. This works especially well when the building is already moving its office or intercom lines to VoIP.

Either way, the code requirements stay the same: the phone must reach a live, trained answering point around the clock, and it must keep working during a power outage — which is why battery backup is not optional.
