Elevator Phone Line Replacement & Service in NYC

Most of this work is planned โ€” a building replaces its copper line before the carrier retires it, or upgrades a cab phone during a scheduled modernization. We also take the emergency calls, when a line has already gone dead or an inspection turned up a violation. Either way you get a cellular call path with battery backup, installed by our own technicians.

In short

An elevator phone service โ€” also called an elevator telephone service โ€” is the dedicated line that connects the emergency phone in an elevator cab to someone who can send help. In New York City most of those lines still run on analog copper, and carriers are retiring copper, so buildings are moving them to cellular.

Callifi provides the cellular line itself โ€” the call path, the cellular device, and a battery backup sized for a real outage. We reuse your existing cab phone or replace it, and route calls to whatever number your building designates. We are not an answering service and we do not perform the monthly compliance testing.

Carriers are retiring copper POTS lines

If your elevator phone still runs on an analog copper line, the carrier is under no obligation to keep it in service โ€” and pricing on the lines that remain has climbed steeply. Buildings that wait tend to discover the problem during an inspection rather than before one.

What NYC code requires of your elevator phone

Elevator emergency communication in New York is governed by ASME A17.1 (adopted through the NYC Building Code) together with ADA accessibility requirements. Worth knowing before you shop, because most failed inspections come down to one of these rather than the phone itself.

  • Two-way voice communication that works without the passenger needing to press, hold or speak into anything they must first locate by sight.
  • A live person on the other end โ€” not voicemail, not an answering machine, and not a number that rolls to a cell phone that may or may not be answered.
  • Identification of the car, so whoever answers knows the building address and which elevator is involved.
  • Power that survives an outage. The phone has to keep working when the building does not.
  • Documented monthly testing, with logs available to the inspector. Buildings routinely have working phones and still fail because nobody kept the paperwork.

We handle the line, the hardware and the power. Testing records and whoever answers the call stay with you โ€” more on exactly where that line sits below.

Your three elevator phone line replacement options

When the copper goes, there are three realistic paths for an elevator telephone line. We provide the cellular one, and we will tell you plainly when one of the others suits your building better.

OptionBest forTrade-off
Keep copper Buildings with a working line and a near-term sale or gut renovation planned Costs rise yearly and the carrier can retire the line with limited notice. A stopgap, not a plan.
CellularWhat we do Most buildings. Nothing depends on building wiring, the tenant network, or a copper pair that may not exist next year. Needs a verified signal test in the machine room and the pit before you commit. Monthly carrier cost per unit.
VoIP Buildings already running a hosted phone system that want the elevator on the same platform The line is only as reliable as the building's network and its power. More moving parts between the cab and help.

We run the signal test before quoting. If cellular will not hold in your pit, we will say so before you have paid for hardware.

What we install

A complete, self-contained call path for the cab โ€” independent of your building's wiring and its power.

Site and signal survey

Machine room, cab and pit. We verify what will actually work in your shaft rather than assuming it from the street.

Cellular device

Supplied and installed by our technicians, with the carrier connection provisioned and tested before we leave.

Battery backup

A UPS sized to carry the line through a genuine building outage, not the ten minutes a small unit gives you.

Your existing cab phone

Usually already in place and perfectly good โ€” we reuse it. If it is dead or non-compliant, we can replace it.

Routing to your number

Calls go to whatever number you designate โ€” management office, superintendent, or the answering service you already use.

Scheduled around you

Normally booked a few weeks out and finished in one visit per car. Dead line or open violation? Tell us and we move you up.

What we do, and what we don't

Elevator phone vendors bundle wildly different things under the same words. Here is exactly where our line sits, so you know what you still need to arrange.

CALLIFI PROVIDES

  • The cellular call path and carrier connection
  • The cellular device, supplied and installed
  • Battery backup sized for a real outage
  • Reuse of your existing cab phone, or a replacement if it is needed
  • Routing to the number your building designates
  • Cutover from the retiring copper line

YOU OR YOUR VENDOR ARRANGE

  • Whoever answers the call โ€” we route to your number, we are not the answering service
  • 24/7 monitoring, if you want a staffed center rather than your own office
  • Monthly test calls and the dated logs an inspector asks for
  • Elevator car maintenance and anything inside the controller

If you need a monitoring center, say so and we will point you at one. We would rather be clear about the boundary than have you find it during an inspection.

Emergency elevator phones by building type

The code is the same everywhere. The signal conditions, the approvals and who signs off are not.

Commercial office

Multiple banks and freight cars, coordinated with building management and your elevator contractor.

Co-op and condo

Board-friendly pricing and a clear line between what the building owns and what we maintain.

Mixed-use buildings

Retail at grade and residential above often means split responsibility. We document who owns which line.

Municipal and institutional

Municipal building emergency elevator phones for schools, libraries, clinics and agency properties โ€” including procurement paperwork and insurance certificates.

Industrial and warehouse

Freight elevators and lifts in buildings where cellular signal in the pit is the deciding factor.

Multi-elevator buildings

Several cars on one riser, each identified separately so whoever answers knows which cab to send help to.

Managing the whole building rather than one line? We also handle tenant phone systems, lobby phones and PA, and we repair existing phone systems across the same territory.

Where we install emergency elevator phones

Our technicians are dispatched from 16 East 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan, so most of the tri-state area is a same-day drive.

Emergency elevator phones throughout New York City โ€” Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, including landmarked and municipal properties.

Westchester

Yonkers, New Rochelle, White Plains and the surrounding county.

Frequently asked questions

What is an elevator telephone service?
It is the dedicated phone line that connects the emergency phone inside an elevator cab to someone who can send help. Code requires that line to work when the building has lost power and to reach a live person. Historically it ran on an analog copper POTS line from the carrier; today most New York buildings are moving it to cellular as copper is retired.
Do you answer the emergency calls?
No. We provide the call path and route it to whatever number your building designates โ€” your management office, the superintendent, or an answering service you already use. Code requires that a live person answers, so make sure the number you give us is one that is always staffed. If you need a monitoring center and don't have one, tell us and we will point you toward one.
Do you do the monthly testing and provide compliance logs?
No. Monthly test calls and the dated records an inspector asks for stay with the building or your elevator maintenance contractor. We make sure the line works and stays working; the paperwork is yours. We would rather say that plainly than have you assume it is covered.
How far ahead should we schedule an elevator phone replacement?
Most buildings book a few weeks out, which is the cheapest and least disruptive way to do it โ€” you pick the date, the cab stays in service, and nothing is done under pressure. Survey to installation is usually one to two weeks. If your line has already failed or you have an open violation, say so when you call and we will prioritize it, often within a few days.
What happens when my copper elevator line is retired?
The line stops working and the elevator is out of compliance from that moment. Carriers are not required to maintain copper indefinitely, and pricing on what remains has risen sharply. The practical answer is to move to a cellular line with battery backup before the decision is made for you.
Why cellular rather than VoIP?
A cellular line does not depend on your building's network, its wiring, or tenant equipment. In an emergency those are exactly the things most likely to be down. VoIP can work well where a building already runs a hosted system, but it puts more between the cab and help. The one thing cellular needs is signal, which is why we test the pit before quoting.
How much does an elevator phone line cost in NYC?
It depends on the number of cars, whether the existing cab phone can be reused, and the device and UPS your building needs. A cellular line typically costs less per month than what carriers now charge for a maintained copper POTS line. We quote per building after the survey, and the survey is free. See our breakdown of elevator phone line costs in NYC.
Can we keep our existing cab phone?
Usually, yes โ€” most cab phones are fine and we simply move them onto the new cellular path. If yours is dead, or does not meet current accessibility requirements, we can replace it as part of the same visit.
Will the line still work in a blackout?
Yes. Every installation includes a UPS sized to carry the line through a real building outage, not the few minutes a small unit gives you. Because the path is cellular, it also does not care whether the building's network or wiring is down.
Can several elevators share one line?
Each car needs to identify itself to whoever answers, so they know which elevator to go to. Depending on the configuration, cars can sometimes share, but in most cellular installations each cab gets its own unit. We cover the detail in this article on shared elevator lines.
Do you install elevator phones in municipal buildings?
Yes. Schools, libraries, clinics, courthouses and agency properties are a regular part of our work, including the procurement paperwork, W-9s and certificates of insurance that public buildings require before a vendor can be on site.
Do you serve buildings outside the five boroughs?
Yes โ€” Westchester, Long Island, Northern New Jersey, Connecticut and the Hudson Valley, dispatched from Midtown Manhattan.
