Keep your current system

Can't get POTS lines? SIP trunks keep your legacy phone system alive.

Carriers are retiring analog and POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines across New York. If your building can't get new copper lines โ€” or the ones you have keep failing โ€” Callifi installs SIP trunks on your existing PBX so you keep your phones, your extensions, and your workflow. No rip-and-replace required.

The problem: copper lines are disappearing

For decades, NYC businesses connected their phone systems with analog trunk lines (POTS) delivered over copper wiring from the telephone company. Those copper lines are going away. Verizon, AT&T, and other carriers are actively decommissioning copper infrastructure, refusing new POTS line orders, and letting existing copper degrade without repair.

If you're running an Avaya, NEC, Nortel, Panasonic, Mitel, or Toshiba phone system on analog trunks, you may have already noticed: lines going dead for days, the carrier refusing to dispatch a tech, or being told "we can no longer provide service at this address."

The good news: your phone system doesn't have to go away just because copper lines do. SIP trunks deliver calls over your internet connection and plug directly into the same PBX you're already using.

What is SIP trunking?

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunking replaces your physical analog lines with virtual phone lines delivered over your internet connection. Instead of copper wires from the telephone company, your PBX connects to a SIP trunk provider through your existing network โ€” same phone numbers, same extensions, same call routing, same phones on every desk.

Think of it this way: your PBX is the brain of your phone system. Analog trunks were the road connecting it to the outside world. SIP trunks are a new, better road โ€” the brain doesn't change, just the connection to the telephone network.

Same phones

Your desk phones, conference phones, and all extensions stay exactly the same. Nobody needs training.

๐Ÿ”ข

Same numbers

We port all your existing phone and fax numbers. Your clients call the same number they always have.

Same PBX

Your Avaya, NEC, Nortel, Panasonic, or Mitel PBX keeps running โ€” we just change what feeds it.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Usually cheaper

SIP trunks typically cost less per month than the analog lines they replace โ€” especially for businesses with many lines.

Systems we add SIP trunks to

We install SIP trunks on virtually any legacy PBX that has a PRI, T1, or analog trunk card โ€” or we add a SIP gateway to convert SIP to the format your system expects. Here are the systems we work on most:

Avaya IP Office Avaya Partner ACS Avaya Aura / Definity NEC SL2100 / SV9100 NEC DSX Nortel Norstar / BCM Panasonic KX-NS700 Panasonic KX-TDE / TDA Mitel / ShoreTel Connect Toshiba Strata CIX Toshiba IPedge Cisco UCM

Even if your system isn't listed โ€” call us. If it has trunk ports, we can almost certainly connect SIP trunks to it.

How we do it

Free on-site assessment

We visit your office, inspect your PBX, check your trunk configuration, verify your internet bandwidth, and determine the best SIP trunk approach for your specific system.

Install the SIP gateway (if needed)

If your PBX has native SIP trunk support (like Avaya IP Office or NEC SL2100), we configure it directly. If it's an older analog system (like Avaya Partner ACS or Panasonic KX-TDA), we install a SIP gateway that converts SIP to the analog or PRI signal your PBX expects.

Provision SIP trunks

We set up your SIP trunk service with the right number of channels for your call volume. We configure failover, caller ID, 911/E911 routing, and codec settings optimized for voice quality.

Port your numbers

We port all your existing phone numbers from your current carrier to the SIP trunk provider. Same numbers, zero downtime โ€” your old lines keep working until the moment the port completes.

Test and cut over

We test every line, every extension, inbound and outbound calls, fax, caller ID, voicemail, and 911. When everything passes, we cut over during a scheduled window with zero downtime.

Ongoing support

After cutover, Callifi is your ongoing support contact for both the SIP trunks and your legacy PBX. One call handles everything.

Is this right for you?

SIP trunking is the right move if:

You can't get new POTS lines

Your carrier won't provision new analog lines at your address, or existing lines keep failing with no repair ETA.

Your system works fine

Your PBX and phones are healthy โ€” the only problem is the lines connecting them to the outside world. No reason to rip and replace.

You want to save money now

SIP trunks typically cost 30-50% less per month than analog lines. Keep your same system, lower your bill.

You're not ready to migrate yet

Maybe you'll move to hosted VoIP eventually, but you have 2-3 good years left on your current PBX. SIP trunking buys that time.

And when you are ready to migrate to hosted VoIP, Callifi handles that too โ€” same team, same relationship. SIP trunking now doesn't lock you into anything.

SIP trunking questions

Will my fax machine still work with SIP trunks?
In most cases, yes โ€” with the right configuration. Fax over SIP requires specific codec settings (T.38 fax relay) and timing adjustments. We configure this during installation and test every fax line before cutover. For businesses that fax heavily, we may recommend a dedicated SIP channel with fax-optimized settings, or transitioning to our CalliFax cloud fax service for higher reliability.
What happens if my internet goes down?
SIP trunks depend on your internet connection. We configure automatic failover so inbound calls route to a backup destination (mobile number, voicemail, or secondary location) if your internet drops. For businesses where phone downtime is unacceptable, we recommend a secondary internet connection from a different provider as a failover โ€” we can set this up as part of the installation.
How many SIP trunks do I need?
Each SIP trunk channel handles one simultaneous call. If you have 4 analog lines today, you typically need 4 SIP channels โ€” but since SIP trunks are software-defined, adding more is instant and inexpensive. We analyze your current call volume during the assessment and recommend the right number of channels. Unlike analog lines, you can scale up or down anytime without a carrier truck roll.
Do I need a special internet connection?
Each concurrent voice call uses about 100 Kbps of bandwidth โ€” so even a basic business internet connection can handle 10-20 simultaneous calls without issue. We test your connection during the assessment and configure QoS (Quality of Service) settings to prioritize voice traffic over data. If your connection is marginal, we'll recommend an upgrade before proceeding.
Is SIP trunking a permanent solution or just a bridge?
It can be either. Many businesses run SIP trunks on their legacy PBX for years with no issues. Others use it as a bridge while they plan a full migration to hosted VoIP. There's no commitment or lock-in โ€” Callifi supports both paths. When your PBX eventually reaches end-of-life, we handle the migration to hosted VoIP using the same SIP trunk infrastructure, making the transition even smoother.
How much does SIP trunking cost?
SIP trunk service is billed per channel per month, and the rate depends on how many channels you need. In most cases, SIP trunks cost 30-50% less than the analog lines they replace. Installation is a one-time fee that covers the on-site assessment, gateway hardware (if needed), configuration, number porting, and testing. Call us at (212) 423-1234 for a free assessment and quote.
What about 911 / E911?
SIP trunks support E911 (Enhanced 911) with your registered business address. We configure E911 routing during installation and verify it works before cutover. Your building's physical address is registered with the PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) so emergency services dispatch to the correct location โ€” just like with your current analog lines.
