Operator Connect lets you add real phone calling to Microsoft Teams through a carrier, managed from the Teams admin center. Here's how it works, what it costs, and when it beats the alternatives.
Operator Connect is Microsoft's program for connecting Microsoft Teams to the public phone network through a carrier, so your team makes and receives regular phone calls inside Teams โ with the carrier relationship managed directly from the Teams admin center instead of through hardware you run yourself.
Teams out of the box does meetings and internal calls, not phone calls. To ring a customer's cell phone or receive calls to your business number, Teams needs a connection to the PSTN โ the regular phone network. Microsoft offers three routes:
Your operator provisions your phone numbers into the Operator Connect framework. From your side, numbers show up in the Teams admin center where you assign them to users, auto attendants, and call queues like any other Teams resource. Calls flow: caller โ carrier network โ Microsoft's peering โ your user's Teams apps on desktop, mobile, and desk phones. Porting your existing business numbers in works the same as any carrier port โ typically a few business days, with no downtime when managed properly.
You still need Teams Phone licensing from Microsoft (bundled in some enterprise plans, an add-on otherwise), plus the operator's per-user or per-line calling rate. For most businesses, carrier rates through Operator Connect undercut Microsoft's own Calling Plans while adding the thing Microsoft doesn't sell: a service relationship with an actual carrier who answers questions, fixes porting snags, and supports your rollout. Our full breakdown: the real cost of Teams Calling Plans.
Choose it when your company already lives in Microsoft 365, wants phone service without running telecom infrastructure, and values having a real provider behind the calling. Choose Direct Routing only if you have complex routing needs or contractual carrier obligations. Choose Calling Plans if simplicity outweighs cost and support.
